HOW DOES DBT-C WORK?
The principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy are modified in DBT-C to suit the developmental and cognitive needs of children.
DBT-C is tailored to address the needs of pre-adolescents who struggle with managing intense emotions. These children may exhibit impulsive behavior, overreact to situations, resist change, and resort to verbal or physical outbursts when overwhelmed emotionally. Unfortunately, their actions often draw attention without addressing the root cause of their emotional distress. This pattern becomes cyclical and can destabilize the child further, as well as affect their caregivers.
For children in the pre-adolescent stage struggling with emotional dysregulation, DBT-C is a proven method of improving their ability to manage emotions and develop healthy skills. DBT-C (Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children), facilitated by specialized counselors within an accepting environment, offers personalized strategies that empower these young individuals to overcome obstacles. Through this program, pre-adolescent children can build self-confidence, self-worth, and resilience – all crucial components for long-term success. Our aim is to create a positive atmosphere that fosters growth and encourages children to approach life’s challenges constructively.
he approach emphasizes finding a “middle path” where clients can accept their situation while simultaneously working towards change. However, unlike adult DBT, DBT-C includes an extensive parent-training component. Additionally, individual treatment for the child features child-friendly materials like cartoons or videos as well as activities such as role-playing.
